Baudin’s expedition was of great interest to Napoleon and Josephine Bonaparte, and many of the species brought back to France by expeditioners went to Josephine’s garden at Malmaison. This medallion was used on the frontispiece of Lesueur and Petit’s 1824 Atlas (see next image) and shows Malmaison’s menagerie. Many of the Australian plants at Malmaison were drawn by the great French botanical illustrator Pierre-Joseph Redouté.
